Why do we have to study the bible?

I enjoy it. Reading the Bible enriches me spiritually and intellectually.

Why do we have to study the bible?
To hear about Jesus and Mary and God and Joseph and Jesus' apostles'
Reply:We don't. Drop your theology class. Problem solved.
Reply:you don't have to. but if you want to, you can study it for moral lessons, historical background, as a great work of literature originating in the middle east, as fascinating mythology, or as religious rules. it all depends on how literally you take it. and really, no one knows how literally it is meant to be taken. that's where the breaks in many religions come to play.

Reply:If they make you study it it's because religious people almost always want to convert everyone else to their beliefs.

But even if you're not a religious person reading it is as good as reading any other book because it educates and broadens your mind (this last only applies if you read many other books on different topics, of course.)
Reply:You don't.
Reply:Scholars and historians study the bible for academic reasons. They want to know how the people during Jesus' time lived. Clergy study the bible for religious justification and to become closer to God and/or Jesus' teachings. Normal people study the bible either to better understand their faith, to find affirmation in life, or just because they want to.

I think your reason for studying the bible would differ from mine, as mine would differ from the next person. It's a personal decision which normally correlates in some way to what is going on in your life at that moment.
Reply:The thing of "having to study" anything is a total mistake, mostly if you are sufficiently entitled to make your own decisions.

Whether it is the case or not, and religion apart, the Bible (which etymologically means "collection of books") is quite interesting: you can see a development of an entire nation, as well as human thinking (from the very mythical explanations to a sociological order in a community).

On the other hand, the literary structures and how the stories get related is quite complicated and could easily get a hand-to-hand with some avant-garde novels.

And if you are an avid reader who would like to get certain books and/or passages explained, almost all stories can get eventually related to the Bible, the Greek myths and popular stories.
Reply:at least u can get some of the gretest moral things ....it is good for ur sense of humanity cause i think it wont let u do some kinds of things....u may get to a nice human at least!!
Reply:No one should MAKE you. But the reason people say to is because Christianity is the mainstream religion in this country. You don't want to rock the boat now do you? Naughty naughty.
