I don't believe in God. Yet I do bible studies, and place great value in what the bible teaches me about how to live my life. I always try to do what the Bible suggests. And I often foul up.
So is it possible to abide by what the Bible teaches us without believing in God or should only those who believe in God bother with the Bible?
Do we have to believe in God to learn, appreciate and abide by the Bible?
No, you don't have to believe in God in order to appreciate and abide by the Bible. This book follows one of the golden rules of wisdom: it speaks the language of common people. Prominent atheists are among those who show a great deal of respect for the Bible. One of them comes to my mind right now: Argentinian poet Jorge Luis Borges.
Reply:Be your own judge. Remember that a bible or any other book is not teaching you anything. They are just words written on a paper. No matter what book, we always filter everything we read through our minds. We only learn what we are ready to learn and willing to learn.
Reply:Considering that the first commandment of the ten reads, "I am the Lord your God," I don't think an atheistic worldview is compatible with biblical obedience.
Besides, you've made a great point in admitting you often foul up. We all foul up, and often. The question is, what do we do about that? Is there anything we can do about the fact that we've fallen short of God's expectations for us, or is there instead something God has done for us to make provision for our sins? The Bible teaches the latter, but to accept the latter, you must first believe that God exists.
Reply:good thing you read the teachings in the Bible, but have you read it all?? as in cover to cover?????because if you did, then that means you have learned about the salvation. That No matter how good you are as a person, but if you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ in your life, the good things you have done will be useless. Why are you doing good things here on earth when eventually you will die? For the people to remember you? Aren't we all have life endings? It will be non sense. There is more to life... God bless you!
Reply:Everyone who has ever read the Bible for personal enrichment has chosen parts of it to emphasize, and parts of it to all but ignore. Your reading of the Bible deemphasizes God and emphasizes (I guess) humility and virtue. Seems just as valid as any to me.
Reply:You do not have to believe in the DMV to stop at a stop sign or go on a green light. Same idea.
Reply:We believe in God because it's true. Everyone should do what the Bible says, but not everyone is going to believe in God. That part is your choice.
Reply:If you really do abide by the Bible, like you say, then you'll believe in God. Because it tells us so.
Also, what's the point of living a "good life" if you don't believe in Jesus? If you are reading much of the Bible, you'll have learned that Jesus is the only "way, the truth and the light." You can be a great person, but you won't get into heaven if you haven't accepted Jesus into your heart, your life.
Sorry if this answer sounds harsh, but it's true.
And on a side note, we all mess up. But don't worry, God is merciful! If you are sorry, God will always forgive you if only you ask! He's awesome!
Reply:Okay.... I am going to upset some of my Christian friends here, but I don't think that you Have to believe in God in order to read, study, and appreciate the bible. I am glad that you see the value of what it teaches. Don't worry about "screwing up" sometimes. We all do and that is part of the process of growing and become a more mature person (or believer). The bible is filled with hundreds of great observations about how to live a more peaceful and prosperous life. Just remembering to Love your neighbor could erase so many of the issues we face today. I salute you and encourage you to keep it up!!!
Reply:I don't believe in God because I was reared by the bible.
I don't believe in God because others do
I don't believe in God because I feel as if I should
I believe in God because I want to
I believe in God because of the feelings inside that was always there inside of me, then later learned that it was because God was always there guiding me, keeping me safe (my soul) and filled me with an immense love
I believe in God because of my heart, not the bible but my heart believes in the bible and my heart feels God

i dont believe in god but the 10 commandments thing is a good rule on which to live life to some extent,
it teaches values but this should also be done in schools you should not have to be religious to understand the right's from the wrongs in life.
Reply:Out of the following situations, which you would prefer.
Believe that there is no God and realize his existence at death.
Believe that there is God and realize that God is a myth
Believe that there is God and meet him at death
Believe that there is no God and meet death
Now you decide which is better today - whether believe or not.
Reply:I think you can beleive or abide by any kind of writings that you see of benefit for you...
If you don't beleive in God, you have to follow your mind..especially when reading The Bible !!
